Mormonism is a relatively new branch of Christianity that formally organized as the Church of Christ in 1830. Joseph Smith Jr., the founder and patriarch of the church, based his new religion on years of previous religious experiences, most notably the angel Moroni directed Smith to the Hill Cumorah in 1823 to unearth the golden tablets, a supposed ancient work that was later translated by Smith into the Book of Mormon.
